Girl

A small cottage sits in a green valley, just a puff of smoke coming out of the chimney every once in a while. A mother who thinks she knows best serves coffee to a father at the kitchen table reading the newspaper. Enter a young girl walking into a kitchen and then her mother snaps. The story "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid shows how a mother's mistakes from the past affect the parenting of her daughter.

In the story “Girl” ,Jamaica Kincaid wrote a short story that would be hard for most people because of how short it is, but to me having the story be longer is much more hard for many reasons. In this story it has no "explanation," it’s just what is happening now. I strongly feel in order to understand this story the reader needs to put themselves into the story to see the point. If you were to put yourself in to the short story it will show that the mothers in this story just want their daughters to have a better life, make better decisions and to not make the same mistakes that they made.

Though the story “Girl” is short, if you look at it in a different perspective it will show you that it is being told in the mothers perspective. In the story a young girl is getting told off by her mother. Now you may think that it is normal but it isn’t because the mother is calling her daughter a slut. Also in the story to me I believe that the mother is trying stop her daughter from becoming what she was when she was her daughter's age. This is true to me because her mother is telling her that she should stay at home and do the dishes, clean the house, and that she should iron her husband’s clothes like her mother is.

Although a mother means well in life sometimes she means to well and it ends up not ending well. So if your mom is taking over its because means well and that she doesn’t want anything to happen to you.

  1. Holli- I truly enjoyed reading your paper. You brought up some good points. I give you a lot of credit because I wouldn’t have been able to analyze “Girl” that well. Your transitions really stood out because they were so good. Also I thought that you had a really good thesis.
